should use the "urlreader" class which is shipped in 0.6 i think..

btw, blocking allow_url_fopen for SECURITY reasons is a fake ;) there's nor really a security flaw by allowing this, but commercial interests. The function slow down the system, disallowing it means more customers per server... more customer/server == more profit... thats a simple calculation.

good hosts are not blocking it. In germany p.e. hosteurope.de is one of the samples allowing all features required for modern web apps.

simplexml is the fastest way to fetch xml..

Nosscire,

Thanks for a great test report and the suggested change! I used the Mumble icons to integrate the look of Mumble into EQDKP+ and it works well. Looks good on your site too!

What provider are you using for your Mumble server? Is it also Multiplay or someone else?

Wallenium,

I have found the urlreader class and should be able to switch to using it by looking at other code that uses it, however I'm wondering if I should first attempt to open the file using simplexml_load_file and if that doesn't work use urlreader.

My reasoning is that if simplexml is the fastest way to do this, and I see it is used in several other places (Classes: PluginUpdCheck, PlusUpdCheck, fightstats, mediacenter, battleofthebest), should it be tried first?

HEX

yeah, cause its the standard of php5 ;) i would recommend using simplexml only, 0.7. p.e. will not run on servers blocking external connections

Might be the main reasoning. It is easier to take advantage of badly coded websites if allow_url_fopen is enabled though, compared to curl.
In any which way, it is blocked by many hosts, the reasons for it doesn't really matter :)

As for my host, i'm using Multiplay as well. Used to use MMO-Mumble.com, but they don't have the same XML format as Multiplay, and as it turns out multiplay is way way cheaper (too bad I didn't know about them before).

Just thought that I would chip in and let you know that I am using it as well while we evaluate Mumble as a TS replacement.

Haven't found any problems yet and have had some really positive feedback on the inclusion of a link to the set-up information and the direct link to the server.

Only complaint so far is that people would like to see who is on; but that’s a slightly bigger issue!

Oh and its hosted by Multiplay as well :)

As another follow-up Multiplay have just released a Mumble viewer that shows who is online. There seem to be some teething problems but it looks good so far.
